The video I choose is actually a condom commercial but I think it is a really good one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLdFreZRw0s . It does give a lot of good information, first off the guy didn’t want to use a condom and so the young lady stopped because she did want him to us a condom; which conveys a really good message that there should be a mutual consent between the people before anything serious actually happens. In the commercial the girl is being very honest which is good because the best thing a person can be especially in those situations is to be completely honest. The last thing I really like about this commercial is that it brings up the very true point that it’s only a condom. Just because the guy wears a condom doesn’t mean it won’t feel good, there are entire companies out there that make money trying to make sex more enjoyable. There really isn’t any misinformation or scare tactics in this commercial which makes it that much more affective because a lot of people really do not respond well to scare tactics. I think that this add is targeted to the college age people as well as the recently graduated demographic.
I think that advertising in general will have a great impact on STD/STI’s prevention as well as help stop unexpected pregnancy because it does two things. First it puts information out there, even if it is just one fact, the more information the better prepared people will be when it comes to making a decision. Second by bringing it up so much and being remind of the issues it forces people to think about STD/STI’s and encourages the public to go find more information of the subject.

When a girlswants you to have sex and the only way to go ‘it’ is if you wear a condom. If a girl wants you to wear a condom and you don’t want to, the girl will leave because she doesn’t want to get pregnant or an STI. It doesn’t use a fear message because the commercial is just giving you facts of what a typical girl would do if your date/boyfriend doesn’t want to wear a condom but she does. This commercial is aiming at teenagers are sexually active but does not want to use protection. I think it is effective because she rejected the guy and left him hanging feeling stupid because he wouldn’t cooperate.
ReplyDeleteI liked your comment about how scare tactics really do work. Let's be frank...everybody is at least a little selfish and if they are doing something that they enjoy and they don't see it harming them then why would they feel like they need to change. When it comes down to it, realizing that they could potentially end up hurt they change. There is fear involved in changing behavior. Now that isn't to say that you can't incorporate humor to take some of the pressure off, which this add does quite well. The fear that this commerical instills is more of the "what would happen if..." I like the idea of incorporating fear into a message but only if it is done with some humor. I think it makes a lasting impression and really gets you thinking about what you value.
ReplyDeleteColin,
ReplyDeleteI agree with the three points that you make, especially the one about wearing a condom not being a big deal. Sure, it's like taking a bath with your socks on, but it doesn't eliminate all of the pleasure. Secondly, being able to stand up for what you want and are okay with is a big part of communication with your sexual partner. Lastly, it isn't normal for commercials to depict interracial couples, and I think that added realness to the commercial.
Colin--
ReplyDeleteYou brought up some interesting points. First, in today's society scare tactics do not work that well. Long gone are the days when people reacted to minor scare tactics. I came across a PSA from 1944 that essentially used scare tactics to get service men to use condoms. But those times were different. Also, agree with you that advertising can have a possitive effect on the prevention of STI/STD' and unwanted pregnecy, as long as those putting the advertising together understand the complexities of today's society and approach the subject in an appropriate fashion. After all, some information is better then none.
The fear that this commercial instills is if I run out of condoms. Did you see the look on that poor guys face? Looked like blue balls mixed with just finding out that his puppy was cannibalized by his neighbor's bigger, meaner dog. Condoms suck, lets be honest. I mean really, in class I want everyone to raise their hands if they would rather be wearing a condom than not during sex. No JK... Of course, for those first time encounters and the girl/guy with the dirty reputation (which you should stay away from anyway), its not a question. But for some people it's like, "wow, really, do I have to?" This brings up a good point. How do you enforce something that many people don't like? Showing a commercial with a hot chick who probably looks good naked (I mean, condoms do make you think of that sort of thing) is probably a good start. Scare tactics probably work... kind of. But all this speculation really just boils down to how much you like your baby making tools. Wrap it up kids. Gotta wear the party hat to get the party favors.
